Gregg Family

 

William Gregg was born about 1642 in Ireland.

His wife was named Ann.

Ann and William's children included:

John Gregg (1668, married Elizabeth Cooke),
Ann Gregg (1670, married William Dixon and John Houghton),
George Gregg (1674, married Sarah Hogg),
Richard Gregg (1676)

They came to America in 1682 and William received a grant of 200 acres in the Christiana Hundred in Rockland Manor. In January, 1684, he received an additional 400 acres. They called their plantation Strand Millas.

At first they were members of the Newark Monthly Meeting, but in 1687 William and other Quakers in the area received permission to start their own meeting called the Centre Monthly Meeting.

William died in 1687 and Anne died in January 1692

The Society of Friends (Quakers) began in England in the 1650s, when they broke away from the Puritans. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, as a safe place for Friends to live and practice their faith.

 
 
 

John Gregg was born about 1668 in Ireland.

He married Elizabeth Cooke.

Amy Gregg (1698, married Joseph Hadley),
Thomas Gregg (1703, married Dinah Harlan),
Joseph Gregg (1710, married Hannah Beeson),
Samuel Gregg (1712, married Ann Robinson),
Hannah Gregg (1715, married George Robinson) and
Rebecca Gregg (1718, married Spragg).

William Gregg settled on a tract of 400 acres of land, in Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, surveyed to him, 3 mo. 11, 1685. He died "ye 1st of ye 7th month and was buried on his own plantation 1687." (Kennett Mo. Mtg. Records.) So far as ascertained, he had four children:

I. Richard.
II. Ann, m. 1st, William Dixson; 2d, John Houghton.
III. John, b. circa 1668; d. 1738; m., 11 mo. 1694, Elizabeth Cooke, of Concord, Chester co., Pa.
IV. George, m., in 1706, Sarah Hogg.

Of these John and Elizabeth (Cooke) Gregg had the following children:

1. William, m. 7 mo. 29, 1725, Margery Kinkey. 
2. Amy, m. 8 mo. 25, 1721, Joseph Hadley
3. Thomas, m. 2 mo. 10, 1729, Dinah Harlan. 
4. Joseph, b. 8 mo. 5, 1710, m. 10 mo. 4, 1735, Hannah Beeson.
5. Samuel, m. 2 mo. 27, 1737, Ann Robinson.
6. Hannah, m. about 1742, George Robinson.
7. Rebecca, m., about 1740, Spragg.
